What Parents Should Know About Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. It is recommended for children with recurrent tonsillitis or obstructive sleep apnea.

Before Surgery

Your child will need pre-operative blood tests. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen for two weeks before surgery. No eating or drinking after midnight the night before.

Recovery

  • Most children recover fully in 10-14 days
  • Sore throat and ear pain are common after surgery
  • Encourage cold, soft foods like ice cream and popsicles
  • Keep your child home from school for at least one week
